The vajra represents lightning and symbolizes the axis of the sacred mountain, which was viewed anciently as a bridge or ladder relinking or "re-ligioning" heaven and earth. Also known as the Thunderbolt of Indra, Hammer of Thor, and Lightning of Zeus, there is evidence that the Merovingian fleur-de-lis is also a variation of the vajra.
