Locking In, Looking Out
A jazz-rock fusion piece I wrote and recorded with friends in 1976 when I was 21. It was part of a seven song suite representing the seven stages of life. This was the stage between 40 and 50 years.
Burst! Written for a school project in 1981, this piece is a musical archetype for the displacement of space by matter (thus gravity). On the cover of the manuscript, I drew a hand pushing a sphere through a thin elastic film to represent the pressure of space in shaping form of all kinds. The harmonic function occurs as a contrast between an 8-tone diminished scale and the remaining 4 tones.
Signs of Progress, Part 1 and 2 This piece is written in two parts for a piano, flute and clarinet trio. It is an experiment in juxtaposing open fifths within a whole-tone chromatic function, like a cross between Hindemith and Copeland.
Full of Stars Named after the quote from 2001: A Space Odyssey about a monolith found on the Moon, this piece was pure improvisation performed in a single take from beginning to end. I used two MIDI-coupled analog synthesizers in 1988 and just made it up as I went along.
Jazz Orchestrations Experimental synthesized orchestrations of the jazz classics Quiet Now by Danny Zeitlin and I Loves You Porgy by George Gershwin.
Nutcracker Suite This is a collection of excerpts from the Nutcracker Ballet by Tchaikovsky. The interesting thing about this is I improvised all of the orchestrations on a multi-track Motif ES8 digital synthesizer workstation.
